Job Description:

To facilitate the planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of technical assistance activities, supporting vaccine management, injection safety and health care waste management (HCWM) in Member States. The focus of responsibility will be to further efforts to achieve stated goals and objectives through improving forecasting, procurement and logistics of vaccines and other immunization supplies (for all routine and newly introduced vaccines, including seasonal and pandemic influenza), cold chain, vaccine management, safe injection and waste management systems for immunization by supporting Member State efforts to strengthen the aforementioned areas within national immunization programs.
Under the supervision of Regional Technical Officer, IPS and overall guidance of the Regional Adviser, Vaccine-preventable Diseases and Immunization, the incumbent will:
1. Ensure provision of technical assistance to Member States towards improving regional and national capacity in the area of communicable diseases with particular emphasis in the area of injection safety and health care waste management and other priorities within the domain of ensuring overall vaccine quality and safety.
2. Support the Regional Technical Officer, IPS and the Regional Adviser, Vaccine-preventable Diseases and Immunization Programme, in development and implementation of long-term strategies for immunization quality and safety in line with Global and Regional immunization plans and the Medium Term Strategic Planning (MTSP).Provide technical support and advice to countries in developing strategies and plans on vaccine management, injection safety and HCWM, particularly by strengthening forecasting, procurement and logistics of vaccines and other immunization supplies, cold chain, vaccine management, injection safety and waste management.
3. Develop and adapt necessary tools to assess vaccine management, injection safety and HCWM, support the development or revision of training materials.
4. Monitor vaccine management, injection safety and HCWM performance indicators at regional and country level, for most effective/efficient use of immunization resources, and that BCA plans and priorities are met.
5. Ensure integration and coordination of vaccine management, injection safety and HCWM activities at the Regional Office and country level, with all components of immunization services and within the context of the health system strengthening.
6. Performs other duties as requested by the supervisors.

Salary and Benefits:

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 77,326 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 4846 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.

Language Requirements:

Essential: Expert knowledge of English.

Eligibility Criteria

Essential: University degree (Master`s level) in medicine, public health, epidemiology, environmental science, health policy or administration of business administration.
Desirable: Additional university degree in any of the above fields.
Broad knowledge in public health, epidemiology and particularly in disease control and immunization programs. In depth knowledge of immunization supply and logistic systems. Ability to design studies, skills on effective planning and policy development, analyzing data and writing concise reports. Up to date knowledge of novel technologies pertinent to immunization services Emotional awareness; the ability to identify and harness one’s emotions and apply them to tasks; and the ability to manage emotions, which includes both regulating one’s own emotions when necessary and helping others to do the same
