The Putnam began in 1938 as a competition between mathematics departments at colleges and universities. Now, the competition has grown to be the leading university-level mathematics examination in the world. Although participants work independently on the problems, the competition has a team aspect.

Scholarships and awards of $250 to $2,500 to top performing students, $5,000 to $25,000 to top schools, and one of the top five individual performers (designated as a Putnam Fellow) will receive up to A $12,000 scholarship and tuition will be awarded.
Eligibility Criteria:
"The eligibility criteria for the William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition (Putnam Competition) are as follows:
The student must be regularly enrolled as an undergraduate student at a college or university in the United States or Canada.
The student must not have yet received a bachelor's degree.
The student may participate in the Putnam Competition at most four times."
