The National Academic League (NAL) competition is a high school quiz bowl competition that tests students' knowledge on a wide range of academic subjects, including history, science, literature, and current events. The competition is held at the regional, state, and national levels, and the top teams from each level advance to the next.
Eligibility Criteria:
Grade Levels: The NAL is open to students in grades 5 through 9 in middle, intermediate, and junior-high schools.
Team Size: At least two teams of 15 - 30 students are required to participate1.
School Types: Private schools, charter schools, and home-schooled students are eligible to participate in the NAL.
Inclusivity: Students with learning disabilities can participate in the NAL. The NAL game is structured so that all students, including those with disabilities, can be included in at least one quarter.
Each team consists of 15 to 40 students. The team is divided into two groups: the buzzer team, who compete by answering questions to score points against the opposing team, and the presentation team, who prepares a presentation on a specific question given to them in the game. Each quarter of the game emphasizes different skills so different students can participate in different quarters for a total of 40 students on a team
